RoHS Compliance:
The new 'Restriction of use of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive
(simply known as 'Lead Free') comes into force on 1st July 2006 and we have
invested in a new, totally lead free production line in order to be
fully compliant.
With our recent expansion, doubling our production facilities in November
2004; we have made a huge effort and investment to be ready for the new RoHS
directive.
The investment in lead free manufacturing equipment will enable us to meet
our clients future needs. We have installed the new equipment well ahead
of the deadline and believe this will enable Stantek Electronics manufacturing
team to become fully conversant with the new technology, offering our clients
peace of mind as they move towards RoHS standards.
The main impact of the new Directive will be to severely restrict the use
of lead soldering to Ministry of Defence and Mobile applications. However,
use of other traditional materials such as Cadmium, Mercury, Hexavalent
Chromium, and PBB or PBDE flame retardants will also be banned or restricted
in the future.
Installation of a new JUKI 575 surface mount component placement machine,
which is capable of BGA placement, as well as converting one of our Blundell
flow soldering machines has helped us achieve our goal of fully lead
free compliance well ahead of schedule.
Lead free requires much higher temperatures of 240°C in order for the soldering
process to work successfully; however, it is a much cleaner and greener
process.
